Cash-strapped student? You could win £500!

Friends of the Earth has just launched ‘Get Gobby’ a new student competition - partnered with People and Planet and supported by the NUS.
The challenge is to submit a concept to persuade people to eat a more sustainable diet using students’ writing, design, film or other skills.
Three students will win £500. The concepts may also get taken up in future Friends of the Earth campaigns.
Entries close midnight 9 June.

The Guardian International Development Journalism Competition is now open for entries.
The Competition, in partnership with a group of non-governmental organisations, seeks out enthusiastic writers who want to demonstrate their journalistic abilities firsthand by examining international development issues that are all too often under-reported or overlooked.
Entering the Competition can raise your profile as a writer.
The 40 most compelling submissions will be published on guardian.co.uk, while the top twelve shortlisted finalists will travel to Africa, Asia or South America to write a report that will feature online and in print. The overall winner will be announced at the awards ceremony in London this coming November.
There is a full list of themes on the website but they include
• What can be done to accelerate rural education standards in developing countries?
• How can young people growing up in poverty learn to thrive in an adult world?
• Women and armed conflict - sexual violence as a weapon of war
To enter submit a 650-1000 word article on one of the set themes, uploading it using the simple online entry form.

Test Town - A chance to change your environment with innovative ideas!

The Challenge
The challenge is coming up with an idea to use town centre spaces which thrives and is sustainable for your local community. It will be innovative, it will be exciting, it will make people say “I wonder why no-one has thought of doing that before”
The competition is fairly simple. Test Town are looking for highly creative, innovative ideas to stretch the public’s imagination of what a town centre is.
Carnegie UK are going to work with a community to run a TestTown for a long weekend in the summer of 2013. The town will be supplying a selection of venues, details of which will be available just before the competition opens for applications.

If you are currently studying or have just finished an IT-related degree, you are eligible to apply for The Graduate event!
The Graduate’, is an event run by the West Yorkshire Branch of the BCS The Chartered Institute for IT, with support from many local companies.
Like TV’s ‘The Apprentice’ you will need to demonstrate your resourcefulness and interpersonal skills to progress through the initial stages and gain the opportunity to take part in the final.
Many graduates complete their university courses and begin to apply for roles, only to find they are unsuccessful in their applications because of their lack of ‘soft skills’.
‘Soft skills’ are the non-technical skills that will enable you to go far within any industry. It includes such skills as your ability to work well in a group with others, to present yourself in an effective manner, or simply just to network and get along with your colleagues better.
It is these soft skills that ‘The Graduate’ hopes to address, by making you more aware of what may be required of you in a typical assessment centre.
Preparation in this area could mean the difference between a successful application, or a fall at the first hurdle, so by gaining these skills and knowledge through practice, you could just secure yourself that role at the workplace of your choice!

Careers in Africa Recruitment Summits

These are invitation-only events that bring together companies with African talent from the international market. The Summits enable a consortium of leading companies to interview pre-selected candidates.
Summits are held across the world- and one is held in May in London. Although the Summit is in May, the application deadline to attend is very soon: 28th February 2013.

The Roses Student Awards Deadline is almost here!
These awards are a practical way to support the training and development of the next generation of creative professionals, by encouraging the best and the brightest to test their skills on a national stage. It’s your chance to mix and mingle with the agencies and show off what YOU can do!
Students must choose one brief only. There’s just one placement available (for an individual or team of 2) at each agency setting a brief. That’s 10 placements to be won!
Winners will be revealed 14th march at the exhibition in Islington Mill. The most highly commended work will also be on show to 1,000’s of professionals in The Drum readership and the Roses Creative Awards winners’ annual.
Make sure you have chosen your brief wisely and are ready to post your boards by Friday 15th Feb to:
