MMU leads way on energy

Thursday, 24th November 2011

MANCHESTER Metropolitan is rapidly becoming one of the most energy efficient large organisations in the country, according to the Environment Agency.

We rank 59th in the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme placing us ahead of the likes of United Utilities, the Department of Culture Media and Sport and Manchester City Council.

The University is even ahead of Marks & Spencer with their well-publicised zero carbon Plan A programme. MMU ranks sixth out of UK universities with Manchester 13th and Salford 125th.

More than 2,000 large organisations submit an annual report detailing CO2 emissions, details of Carbon Trust awards and data on heating, lighting and power use.

Sam Pickles, carbon reduction manager said: “We have managed to get 86% of our utility supplies on voluntary automatic metering which underlines how aware we are of the importance of monitoring energy usage.”

Director of Facilities, Heather Wilson said: “This is fantastic. We’ve achieved No1 position when compared to our University Peer Group and by a long way. Well done to Sam and everyone involved for getting us to this stage.

Tunde Adekoya, Student Union president said: “What an amazing job. Let’s keep it up.”

Top 20 ranking

In recent years, the university has climbed from 91st in 2007 to 17th last year in the leading university ‘green’ table run by People and Planet.

Total university emissions of carbon dioxide were 21,018 tonnes. Next year the ranking will also include performance on absolute reduction in emissions and reduction in emissions against a growth metric (turnover).
